The Optical Edge in communications networks is a multi-service optical transport network in the regional, metro or “middle mile” areas at the edge of broadband communications networks bringing high bandwidth (100G, 400G) connectivity and transport of 100GE to 400GE clients as well as the xHaul (fronthaul, mid-haul, backhaul) of 4G/5G mobile traffic over DWDM or coherent optical fiber-based networks. The Optical Edge is highlighted in the diagram below providing Access Ring connectivity and high bandwidth optical transport as well as mobile xHaul interconnecting and transporting mobile and fixed access network traffic to and from the core of the network via an optical transport ring. Mesh or point-to-point optical transport topologies can also be implemented in the optical edge for providing extended reach, connectivity, and transport.
