[DZS NEWS] DZS Further Transforms Economics of Optical Edge with Launch of Saber 2200 Coherent xHaul Ethernet Switch

As network capacity demands continue to rise, service providers will increasingly need to make the leap from Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) to XGS (10 Gigabit Symmetrical) PON and beyond to meet subscribers’ thirst for more bandwidth. Traditionally making this transition has been very cost- and time-prohibitive, requiring forklift upgrades or the slow gradual layering of new systems on top of old ones. Then, even when these next-generation technologies were deployed, there was often still significant bottlenecks in network traffic.

To address these challenges, DZS introduced the groundbreaking DZS XCelerate portfolio to:

  • find an innovative way to easily support the transition to any next-generation technology (1G/10G/25G/40G/100G)
  • enable service providers to dramatically reduce total cost of ownership when deploying and transitioning to next-generation services
  • significantly and efficiently increase bandwidth speeds (uplink and downstream) with industry-leading non-blocking architecture

Make the Unimpeded Leap to Any Gig Service with “System-on-a-Card” Innovation

DZS XCelerate is a comprehensive portfolio of next-generation, 10 gig-class fiber access line cards, access switches and fixed form factor, small and large chassis optical line terminal (OLT) solutions that deliver unrivalled multi-gigabit advanced broadband services.

Built with an innovative “system-on-a-card” architecture, DZS XCelerate supports a broad range of widely deployed and next-generation fiber access technologies, including GPON/XGS-PON and 1G/10G/25G/40G/100G Active Ethernet today and the capacity to easily expand to support the emerging 25GS-PON and 50G-PON services in the future.

Unparalleled in the access industry, any of these gigabit and multi-gigabit services can be deployed from the same DZS XCelerate combo line card, enabling the seamless, cost-effective and operationally optimized deployment of multiple technologies simultaneously. XGS-PON and GPON services can be delivered concurrently on a single fiber, enabling bandwidth-hungry GPON subscribers to be upgraded to XGS-PON, increasing available bandwidth for the remaining GPON subscribers.

Consolidated Communications is leveraging DZS XCelerate as part of its network expansion to bring gigabit fiber to 1.6 million locations nationwide.

The unique DZS “system-on-a-card” innovation enables the industry’s only full non-blocking architecture for an unimpeded leap to not only multi-gigabit services, but also the ability to evolve seamlessly to a disaggregated, software-driven architecture with ease.

Ready for Disaggregation

The DZS XCelerate product line was designed with an open, disaggregated future in mind, with 1U fixed form factor OLTs that rack and stack in a conventional disaggregated OLT manner. Additionally, DZS XCelerate supports OLT disaggregation using blades that slot easily into any DZS Velocity chassis. The multi-terabit switch fabric and backplane design of the DZS Velocity chassis provides redundant connections from the OLT “leaf” blades to the central “spine” switching fabric blades of the disaggregated solution, eliminating the need for all of the interconnect transceivers required in a traditional rack and stack configuration.

Deploying a centralized chassis-based approach versus traditional disaggregated approaches reduces the potential points of failure and power consumption, while simplifying installation and maintenance. The DZS XCelerate chassis-based approach gives service providers the flexibility to deploy a disaggregated solution without abandoning the operational benefits of a chassis form factor. This can be game-changing for service providers and the economics and timing of their network transformation, allowing them the flexibility to evolve at their own pace, and even accelerate if and when necessary, without having to replace expensive hardware.

Additionally, the DZS XCelerate combo blade includes two additional QSFP ports on the faceplate that can provide 100Gbps point-to-point Ethernet services for mobile backhaul or business applications that require even more bandwidth than XGS-PON or 10G Ethernet can supply.

Differentiating Benefits

DZS XCelerate easily meets the next-generation broadband access requirements that service providers are craving.

Following are a few of the many unique, industry-leading benefits the portfolio offers. DZS XCelerate is the only broadband access system that delivers:

  • full non-blocking architecture, symmetric services with uplink speeds up to 200Gbps on a single card
  • at least 20% operational savings when compared with stacked 1 RU-based OLT deployments
  • flexible service support for 1G/10G/25G/40G/100G Active Ethernet, GPON, XGS-PON and any combination of these services
  • industry’s highest per-slot fabric link capacity
